General Surface Preparation

New Wood: Ensure that the wood is properly cured, and the surface is dry and cleaned free of all dirt, dust, grease, oil and other contaminants which may affect adhesion, drying, protective properties or appearance of the coated surfaces.

Solvent Cleaning: Oil, grease and wax can normally be removed by using Penta Thinner 41, changing wiping cloths often to assure removal. Some woods, such as Teak, are very oily and surface oil must be removed by wiping thoroughly, several times with Thinner 41 before staining and sealing with Penta N.C. Sanding Sealer. Preservative salts may be removed by cleaning with solvent or water, depending on the type.
Sand the surface with the grain only. Use a medium grit paper at first, and progress to finer paper as the wood becomes smoother. Clean free of all sanding dust by dusting or vacuuming. The surface may be dampened again to raise the grain. If this is done, the wood must be sanded again when dry.

Previously Varnished: All exiting paint, varnish or lacquer should be removed to obtain a bare wood surface, by power and hand sanding, or by use of Penta Paint Stripper. Care must be taken not to damage thinly veneered surfaces. Then treat as for new wood.

Use of Paint Stripper: When using paint stripper, apply it liberally and spread it around with a brush. Allow the old surface to blister (20-30 minutes), but do not allow the stripper to dry on. Use a scraper or putty knife to remove the residue. Furniture with several coats of finish, may require several applications of Penta Paint Stripper to reach bare wood. Remove any residue with steel wool dipped in water, rinsing frequently. Wipe the entire surface with a clean dry cloth. Allow to dry completely. Solvent clean with Thinner 41 or Thinner 792 to remove residual wax remaining from the stripper, with frequent changes of wiping cloth. Finally sand.

Material Preparation: Shake can well before and during use.

Thinning: Reduce strength if necessary, by thinning with Penta N.C. Lacquer Thinner 792. (According to results of test areas)

Application
Test Area: Test for colour on a small sample of similar wood, or an inconspicuous area, with the application method and sealer to be used. The final colour will depend on the type of wood.

Rag-on: Using a soft, clean lint-free cloth, swab on a light application, working quickly and evenly along the wood grain. The colour can be deepened using successive light applications, with 5-10 minutes flash between coats. Finally wipe the surface dry with another clean cloth. Allow to dry for 1-2 hours before sealing.

Spraying: Apply with successive light applications to colour, with 2 to 3 minutes flash between coats. Avoid heavy applications, which can cause runs and too strong a colour.

N.B. Darker stained areas can be lightened and evened out to surround lighter areas, by wiping with N.C. Lacquer Thinner 792.

Filling: Fill holes, cracks, splits and crevices with an appropriate putty or filler (or mixture of wood shavings and N.C. Sanding Sealer), tinted as necessary with woodstain, to blend with surrounding stained wood surface.

Sealing: Allow Wood-stain to dry for 1-2 hours before sealing.

Alternatives:
a)Seal with Penta N.C Clear Sanding Sealer by spray application only. Apply 1 single and 1 double coat, with 5 minutes flash between coats. On humid cloudy days add 5% Retarder 727 to prevent blushing.
Allow to dry for 30 mins before sanding. Apply further sealing coats if necessary, depending on porosity of wood and finish desired. N.B. A small amount of wood stain may be added to the first or second coat of N.C. Sanding Sealer to obtain a more uniform appearance. Do not brush apply N.C. Sanding Sealer over woodstain.

b)For Varnish Systems: the wood stain can be sealed off directly with varnish (P.U. Gloss Varnish or Clear Varnish), brush or spray applied.
